It wouldn’t be our annual Read Around celebration without author visits!  We are so thankful to the PTA for supporting and funding these visits so our children can have experiences with and learn from published authors.  This year, we had virtual author visits - they were a hit!

Children’s House heard books, sang songs and viewed a live illustration by authors Trisha and Stephan Speed Shaskan.  You can purchase books by the Shaskans from this virtual Red Balloon Bookshop. E1, E2 and Middle School heard from author, poet, playwright and spoken word artist, Ka Vang.  Ka shared some of her book Shoua and the Northern Lights Dragon, talked about her inspiration and writing process and led children in a short writing activity.  Shoua and the Northern Lights Dragon is available for free from the MN Humanities Center  or you can purchase a copy of the paperback for $3.21 plus shipping.  With middle school students, Ka shared some of her short stories, which appear in college level anthologies!

 

Listen to Ka Vang retell the classic Hmong folklore, Yer and the Tiger for Classical Minnesota Public Radio. This retelling includes classical Hmong and Western music with illustrations and is free to listen to and download.

Monday, May 9 - Day of Advocacy Full Funding of Special Education

Parents, community organizations, school board members and district officials from across Minnesota will be participating in a day of advocacy to push lawmakers and Governor Walz to fully fund special education. Monday, May 9th we will gather at the State Capitol and online to  urge lawmakers to use 9% of the state surplus to fully fund special education .   In Person  - The State Capitol is open to the public and we plan on gathering on  Monday, May 9th . Committee and legislators' schedules are a bit fluid this time of session. We have a tentative schedule of events for the day but will update the group when Monday's schedule is announced. We are asking those who plan on attending to do two things:   1. Wear RED . We will be sporting the color red to help lawmakers know that we are there to support full funding for special education.
